Great skin doesn't happen by accident - it starts with the right routine. If you ever wondered why some products work for others but not for you, it comes down to your skin type. While everyone is born with a certain skin type, it can change over time, so it is important to take into consideration factors like age, climate, lifestyle, diet, or hormonal changes and adjust periodically.
Matching your routine to your skin type leads the way to a healthy, balanced complexion. Over time using the right products will help you address dryness, breakouts, hyperpigmentation, signs of aging and sensitivities that result with mismatched products.
Understanding your skin type is the first step toward choosing products that truly make a difference, helping to achieve healthy, radiant skin. A professional skin analysis with an Esthetician at the start of your facial treatment helps determine your skin type accurately. Once your skin type is confirmed, it's important to focus on science-based products and expert guidance, rather than trends or sponsorship-driven recommendations.
There Are 5 Main Skin Types: Oily, Dry, Combination, Normal, And Sensitive

Oily Skin
Oily skin often produces excess sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts. The best skincare ingredients for this skin type work to balance sebum production while also cleansing and hydrating the skin.
Salicylic Acid: This beta hydroxy acid (BHA) is a powerhouse ingredient that penetrates deep into your pores to unclog them and reduce acne. Use our Skin Script Clarifying Toner pads or Glycolic and Retinol Pads or Theraderm Gentle Action Pads each help relieve breakouts and create cellular turnover bringing oil and debris to the surface with added benefits from tea tree to calm and sooth inflammation. The benefits support a brighter or even tone and encourage a healthy skin barrier.
Niacinamide: A form of Vitamin B3, Niacinamide balances oil production and reduces any oily shine. We recommend our Smooth & Calm Booster by Scentual Aroma which helps to reduce redness, calm inflammation, and smooth uneven texture.
Clay (Kaolin or Bentonite): Clays are excellent at absorbing excess oil and impurities from the skin, especially in treatment products like our Clay Masques that use Kaolin Clay, Bentonite Clay and Salicylic Acid to prevent and reduce the appearance of acne lesions. We recommend our Farmhouse Fresh Sanded Ground Clarifying Mud Mask or Serios Action Masque by GlyMed Plus.
Retinol: This form of Vitamin A is a popular anti-aging ingredient, but it also reduces breakouts and refines skin texture. We can't say enough about the powers of just the right amount of retinol for so many skin types, but it can be a game changer for oily skin. Use our Dermodality Vitamin A Intense or the Retinol Mixer if hyperpigmentation comes along from those pesky pimples.
Pro Tip: Your oily skin doesn't need every trending ingredient. Take your skincare professionals advice and start in moderation till you find the right amount for your skin type and conditions.
Dry Skin
If you have dry skin, you need moisturizing and nourishing skincare ingredients to help hydrate and restore your skin barrier.
Hyaluronic Acid: This powerful humectant draws moisture into the skin and can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Adding this humectant in the form of a serum 1-2 times per day feels so good and you can add Le Meiux Hyaluronic Serum under any cream-based moisturizer daily.
Ceramides: They help restore and strengthen the skin's natural barrier so it's less susceptible to dryness and irritation.
Botanicals: Natural ingredients like Aloe and Arnica have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe and calm irritated skin. IYF The Cream is one of our favorite replenishing botanical day or night moisturizers. For a soothing balm, our go-to products are Yu-be Japan skincare cream or Steele Family Farm Herbal Healing Balm.
Vitamin E: This antioxidant protects the skin and helps it recover from environmental damage caused by harsh weather, pollution, and other factors. It can also deeply nourish and hydrate the skin when used in moisturizers as well. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Serum is one of the most sought-after dermatologists recommended products. It's a must have for our clients.
Pro Tip: If you tend to get oilier in the summer months change up CE Ferulic to SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF or avoid Vitamin E as a skincare ingredient for summer.
Combination Skin
This is most common of all skin types. It can be harder to create a routine for since it's characterized by having both oily and dry areas on the face. Oilier T-zone(forehead, nose, chin) Normal or dry cheeks. Luckily, there are professional ingredients that can balance out your complexion.
Niacinamide: This ingredient is great for balancing oil production and soothing irritation. If you're prone to acne, Niacinamide can also help reduce the appearance of breakouts without being drying to the skin.
Lactic Acid: Since combination skin can have both oily and dry patches, it's important to use an ingredient that can effectively exfoliate without over-drying the skin. Lactic Acid is a gentle exfoliant that also hydrates the skin. Lactic acid can help improve the skin's natural moisturizing factors and encourage ceramide production, which helps skin retain moisture.
Malic Acid: This dermatologist recommended ingredient works well for combination skin because it exfoliates slowly, controls oil, unclogs pores, and causes less dry skin and irritation than other ingredients in cleansers and moisturizers like salicylic acid. Starting the cleansing process with our Mandelic and Green Tea Cleanser or Idyllic Cleanser by GlyMed Plus can control oily bacteria and brighten the skin without dryness. Our favorite peels for combination skin have a blend of Lactic and Mandelic Acid. This powerful but gentle combination can renew your skin's vibrance and deliver a smooth texture. Try Illumination Fruit Peel Mask at home once a week.
Bakuchiol: A famous skin-smoothing natural plant -derived wrinkle reducer. It will help with diminishing pore size coming from any oily T-zone. It's been widely used as a natural less harsh alternative to some retinoids. It can regulate sebum, making it helpful for combination skin while still being an effective ingredient for mature skin by stimulating collagen production like Retinol.
Normal Skin
If you're lucky to have a normal skin type, you may not have to worry about balancing oily or dry areas. Instead, focus on maintaining your skin's natural radiance with essential nutrients and targeting specific skin goals.
Peptides: These small proteins help your body produce more collagen and elastin, essential proteins that keep skin firm and youthful.
Vitamin C: This powerful antioxidant brightens the complexion and protects against any environmental damage you may encounter throughout the day by fighting free radical damage to skin cells. A serum like Vitamin C Intense or IYF Vitamin C plumping Serum are a great addition to a daily routine that also prevents signs of aging.
Retinol: If you want to further target fine lines and wrinkles, Retinol is a must-have ingredient. As an antioxidant and derivative of Vitamin A, Retinol protects the skin from free radicals and stimulates collagen production, keeping your skin plump and smooth.
A Combination of AHA & BHA: This combination is an amazing exfoliation essential. It can also be a game-changer, sensitive enough to maintain balance within the skin and bringing out that must have glow. Your skincare professional can recommend you to the right balance of gentle daily or weekly acids. The Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta daily skin peel has been a staple for take home products from our Spa.
Sensitive Skin
This skin type requires special care and attention since it reacts negatively to harsh chemicals and the environment. Find gentle and nourishing products that limit any fragrance or preservatives. Stick to professional recommendations and science-based ingredients. This type may also need to work with a Dermatologist as well as an Esthetician to find balance.
Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera is highly regarded for its soothing and hydrating properties. It's the perfect soother for dry and irritated skin, especially if you have other skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea.
Ceramides: Sensitive skin often lacks ceramides, which are lipid molecules that help maintain the skin's barrier and retain moisture. Use products that contain ceramides to make up for this deficiency. We are a big fan of Derma Relief Serum by Le Mieux. It feels so luxurious. A facial oil that is nutrient-rich is a delight to dry, irritated, inflamed, or parched skin.
Antioxidants: These natural ingredients help fight against environmental stressors and pollutants, which are big triggers for sensitive skin. Look for ingredients like Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Green Tea extract to prevent inflammation and soothe irritation.
Sun Protection: Everyone needs sun protection, but sensitive skin = picky skin. Not all sun protection is well received by this skin type. Mineral ingredients may be preferred like SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion Mineral Sunscreen.
Pro Tip: Keep sensitive skin happy! Gentle regular daily care goes a long way.
If You Have Dry or Normal Skin: Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can strip the skin of natural oils, leaving it even drier and more prone to irritation.
If You Have Oily or Combination Skin: Avoid heavy oils and comedogenic ingredients that can clog pores and cause breakouts. Instead, purchase from trustworthy companies like GlyMed Plus, which use reliable and third-party tested formulas.
If You Have Sensitive Skin: Avoid synthetic fragrances, dyes, and strong acids. These ingredients can irritate and inflame sensitive skin, causing redness, itching and discomfort.

Not all skincare ingredients are created equal. While some can work wonders, others may make issues worse. We have discussed ingredients pertaining to the 5 skin types.
